DMAW/EF’s President, Rick Powell, has been involved in direct mail fundraising since his college days working part time on Capitol Hill for a small special interest group. After graduating with a degree in Public Accounting in 1981, he formed and managed a caging and data processing company, Palmer Technical Services. Palmer served the donation processing needs of non-profits with significant direct mail fundraising programs.
After earning an MBA in 1997 from Loyola College in Maryland, Rick started and continues to own the Production Management Group (PMG), which has grown into one of the leading providers of integrated and direct mail production management services to the non-profit sector in the country. In 2007, PMG expanded into online fundraising through a new division, The Engage Group, and in 2010 acquired MMI Direct, a data processing, merge/purge, and list fulfillment company. Rick serves as the companies’ President and CEO and until the end of 2014 was its sole shareholder. In December of 2014 Rick sold 49% of the company to his employees by way of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
Rick’s volunteer work includes several board positions. Previously, he served as the Treasurer of the DMAW Educational Foundation and beginning in January 2016 assumed the role of President. Rick also serves as Vice President/ Treasurer of Partners in Care, a community based non-profit that provides programs and services that support the independence of older adults. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Indian Creek School, where his daughter is a high school senior. Rick was also a founding member of the Anne Arundel County Great Give initiative and served on both its steering committee and training sub-committee.
Rick likes to leverage his company and its supplier relationships to provide pro-bono print and direct mail production services to local non-profits like Make a Wish Mid-Atlantic, The Lighthouse, a homeless prevention support center, and Partners in Care.
His interests include spending time with family and friends, Terps football and basketball and Orioles baseball, and he will always find the time to fit in a round of golf!
A little known fact: Before college Rick was a Security Policeman in the Air Force and during college a Weather Specialist in the D.C. Air National Guard.
